We flew in for a Sunday morning breakfast at the newly remodeled restaurant inside the FBO in the small town of Dalhart in the Texas panhandle. We'd heard good things about the restaurant and decided to try it out for ourselves. Here is our honest review of The Red Baron Restaurant, including the food, experience and what to expect.

    About The Red Baron Restaurant

The Red Baron is located inside the newly remodeled FBO at the Dalhart Municipal Airport in Dalhart, TX. Open daily for breakfast and lunch, they offer standard diner fare - eggs, pancakes, burgers - as well as Tex Mex dishes. With large windows offering views of airplanes taking off and touching down, the restaurant offers plenty of space for both locals and travelers to enjoy a meal and some friendly conversation.

Be sure to check the restaurant's Facebook page for the most up to date hours.

    Our Honest Review

I'll be honest. After looking at the restaurant's Facebook page (there is no website), I didn't have the highest expectations for the Red Baron. There are a lot of glaring typos on the menu and the photos of the food didn't make it look like I was in for the best breakfast of my life. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

The interior, much like the rest of the FBO, was clean and nicely lit, with big windows for viewing the runway outside. Tables were spaced out nicely, though that didn't prevent friendly conversation with patrons at other tables. We enjoyed the welcoming, small town atmosphere while waiting for our food.

The menu was what you'd expect from a typical diner, offering a decent selection of pancakes and waffles, eggs and bacon, biscuits, omelets and hash browns for breakfast; along with burgers, sandwiches, and salads for lunch. There were also a few Tex Mex options on the menu, which I suspect are probably popular. As for the physical menu, it could use a good proof-read. The clever aviation-themed names of menu items would have landed a little better had there not been so many misspellings.

When our food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by the nice plating and taste. Someone in the kitchen seemed to take pride in their work. The veggie omelet with green chiles was delicious, filled with plenty of vegetables that still had a little bite to them and not too much cheese. The cowboy potatoes on the side weren't too greasy, which I appreciated, though they lacked a little seasoning. The homemade green salsa was full of flavor and added a little extra something that took the plate form average to great. The B25 Pile-Up featuring hash browns, eggs and sausage on a biscuit, all covered in white gravy, was satisfying without being too much. The over-medium eggs were cooked just right. The waffles, accompanied by a side of thick-cut bacon, were golden, buttery and sweet - the kind of batter you'd likely find in a hotel, but well executed nonetheless. Topped with strawberry filling and whipped cream, they received a thumbs up from the kids. The coffee was your typical diner coffee. Folgers, I suspect, and a little weak, though if you're the kind that likes to sit and watch airplanes all day while drinking several cups, it's probably better that way.

The service at the Red Baron was great. The waitresses were polite and prompt, always keeping our coffee cups full without hovering. While not part of the restaurant, we also received quick, friendly service from the lineman, who happily fueled the airplane while we ate.

Overall, we had a good experience and a fun family outing. We decided the food was above average for diner food - simple but done fairly well - and we'd like to return to the small town diner for lunch to try the Tex Mex.
